Today, it is time to explore what West-Iceland has to offer. Travel through farmlands towards two stunning but vastly different waterfalls; Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. Close by is Europe’s most powerful hot spring, Deildartunguhver.
Seeing that you are in charge, you get to choose where you go and how long you’ll stop there. History buffs can, for example, explore the settlement of Reykholt, where a Medieval writer of the Sagas, Snorri Sturluson, used to live. Likewise, photographers should visit the fishing town, Akranes, and snap a great picture of one of the most Instagrammable places in Iceland, the Akranesviti Lighthouses.
Víðgelmir is not only the largest cave in Iceland but one of the largest lava tubes in the world, at around 1600 metres (5249 ft) long. The lava tube is located in the Hallmundarhraun lava field on the edge of the Icelandic highlands.
On this tour, you’ll meet your friendly guide at the cave’s visitor centre. They will provide you with a helmet with a headlight before you make your way inside. After descending into the lava tube and walking through a narrow tunnel, the cave opens up into a spacious area, lit up with fixed lights.
You’ll follow your friendly guide along a walkway which will take you from one great hall to the next. You’ll see countless stalagmites, stalactites, and other strange rock formations. The vivid, rainbow-like colours of the cave’s wall will also, undoubtedly, catch your eye.
